Five young stars lighting up AFCON 2025

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has reached its decisive quarter-final stage, but beyond the familiar heavyweights, this edition of the tournament has been shaped by a wave of younger players announcing themselves on the biggest continental stage.

From European-based attackers to rising stars from across Africa, AFCON 2025 has become a showcase of emerging talent, with several first-time participants playing central roles for their countries. Here are five players who have stood out as the tournament enters its final stretch.

Brahim Díaz (Real Madrid, Morocco)

Morocco arrived at their home tournament with expectations resting largely on captain Achraf Hakimi. Instead, it has been Brahim Díaz who has carried the attacking burden with remarkable consistency.

The 26-year-old has scored in every match Morocco have played, including the decisive strike that eliminated Tanzania in the round of 16. With four goals so far, Díaz is the leading scorer of AFCON 2025.

Born in Málaga, Díaz initially represented Spain before switching allegiance to Morocco, the country of his father. His decision has been fully justified by his impact in Rabat and beyond, as his movement, composure and ability to decide tight games have made him the focal point of the Atlas Lions’ attack. As Morocco prepare for their quarter-final against Cameroon, Díaz remains their most potent threat.

Christian Kofane (Bayer Leverkusen, Cameroon)

Cameroon’s campaign has been fuelled by youthful energy, and no one embodies that more than Christian Kofane. The 19-year-old forward has gone from Spain’s second division to the AFCON spotlight in a matter of months.

Signed by Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the season, Kofane has already scored against Bundesliga opposition and in the Champions League. Those performances earned him a place in Cameroon’s squad, and he has repaid the faith with crucial goals.

After making his debut against Ivory Coast, Kofane struck the winner against Mozambique and followed it with another decisive goal in the last-16 victory over South Africa. His speed and directness have given Cameroon an attacking edge that could prove decisive in the knockout rounds.

Ibrahim Mbaye (Paris Saint-Germain, Senegal)

At just 17, Ibrahim Mbaye has become one of the most exciting young players at AFCON 2025. The Paris Saint-Germain winger, who previously represented France at youth level, opted to play for Senegal shortly before the tournament.

That decision has already paid dividends. Mbaye has been a powerful impact substitute for the reigning champions, providing pace and creativity whenever he has been introduced. He assisted Senegal’s equaliser against DR Congo, set up another goal in the group-stage win over Benin and scored in the last-16 victory against Sudan.

With Sadio Mané and Iliman Ndiaye drawing defensive attention, Mbaye has thrived in the space they create, proving he belongs at the highest level despite his age.

Ibrahim Maza (Bayer Leverkusen, Algeria)

Few players have been as influential in Algeria’s run to the quarter-finals as Ibrahim Maza. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder, nicknamed “Mazadona” by supporters, has brought flair and efficiency to Algeria’s midfield.

Born in Berlin and previously capped by Germany at youth level, Maza chose to represent Algeria in late 2024. Since then, he has become a central figure for both club and country, earning a move to Bayer Leverkusen and delivering on the AFCON stage.

He scored after coming off the bench in the opening win over Sudan and has since started every match, winning man-of-the-match honours against Burkina Faso and finding the net again versus Equatorial Guinea. His vision and composure between the lines have made him one of the tournament’s most exciting prospects.

Akor Adams (Sevilla, Nigeria)

Nigeria’s attack is already one of the most feared at AFCON 2025, and Akor Adams has added another dimension to it. The 25-year-old striker joined Sevilla from Montpellier last year and has quickly become a valuable part of the Super Eagles setup.

After scoring on his international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, Adams earned his place in Nigeria’s AFCON squad. He started the opening two matches before returning in emphatic fashion in the 4-0 win over Mozambique, where he delivered a goal and an assist.

With Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman drawing attention, Adams’ physical presence and finishing ability have given Nigeria even more firepower as they prepare for a heavyweight quarter-final clash with Algeria.

As AFCON 2025 heads into its defining phase, these five players represent the future of African football. Whether it is Díaz’s goals, Mbaye’s youthful spark or Adams’ power in attack, the tournament has made it clear that a new generation is ready to take centre stage.
