Fonseca defeats Cerundolo to claim maiden title at Argentina Open

Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, aged 18, has etched his name in history as the 10th youngest champion in ATP Tour history after defeating local favorite Francisco Cerundolo, ranked 26, in the final of the Argentina Open on Sunday.
Ranked 99th in the world and competing in his inaugural tour-level final, Fonseca triumphed with a score of 6-4, 7-6(1) against his 28th-ranked rival.
Despite facing challenges as he attempted to serve for the match on two occasions, Fonseca managed to regain his composure and secured victory in the tie-break amidst an electrifying atmosphere in Buenos Aires.
As the 2024 ATP NextGen champion, he has become the youngest male player from South America to clinch a tour title, and his win will elevate him to 68th in the upcoming rankings to be released on Monday.
"Unbelievable week, even in Argentina there are some Brazilians cheering for me," Fonseca said on court.
"That's just amazing. Every Brazilian, everyone from their country wants this support from your own country. For me, this moment that I'm living is just unbelievable."
He added: "Of course I want to be No. 1, of course I want to win Slams, titles, but my dream is just to play tennis, and I'm living it."
Cerundolo, who was aiming for his fourth career title, faced a break in the seventh game of the first set and managed to fend off Fonseca when the teenager served for the championship at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set.
Nevertheless, Fonseca displayed remarkable composure in the tie-break and celebrated his victory by collapsing in joy onto the dusty clay surface.
Fonseca's journey to his first final was not without difficulty; in the quarter-finals on Friday, he saved two match points to overcome Mariano Navone in a match that lasted just under three hours.
In total, he defeated four Argentinian players on his path to the title.
He had already made a significant impact earlier in January by successfully navigating the qualifying rounds at the Australian Open and defeating top 10 player Andrey Rublev in the first round.
