Fonseca pulls off stunning victory over Rublev in Australian Open debut

Fearless teenage qualifier Joao Fonseca, aged 18, achieved a remarkable victory over ninth seed Andrey Rublev, 27, during his Grand Slam debut on Tuesday, marking the most significant upset of the Australian Open to date.
Supported by enthusiastic Brazilian fans clad in yellow in Melbourne, the talented 18-year-old displayed remarkable composure as he defeated the Russian player with scores of 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-6 (5).
"This is my first experience playing in such a large stadium," Fonseca remarked to the lively crowd at Margaret Court Arena following his triumph. "There are many Brazilians here cheering for me, and I cherished every moment. Thank you very much."
Last month, Fonseca became the second-youngest champion of the NextGen ATP tournament, following current world number one Jannik Sinner, who won the title at the same age five years ago.
Earlier this month, Fonseca secured his second ATP Challenger Tour title in Canberra and successfully navigated the qualifying rounds at Melbourne Park to earn his spot in the main draw of his first Grand Slam.
Ranked 112th in the world, Fonseca entered his first-round match against Rublev riding a 13-match winning streak. Although he had never faced a top-10 player before, he exhibited no signs of nervousness as he engaged in a competitive battle, ultimately clinching the first set decisively in a tiebreak.
Fonseca surged to a 3-0 lead in the second set, at one point encouraging the crowd at Margaret Court Arena to express their support. He secured the second set with an ace.
In the third set, he faced adversity when Rublev broke his serve for a 3-1 lead, but the young Brazilian responded immediately, breaking back to apply pressure on his more seasoned opponent.
The match proceeded to another tiebreak, where Fonseca quickly established a 4-0 lead and managed to fend off a brief resurgence from Rublev, ultimately winning on his first match point.
In the lead-up to the year's opening major, the often volatile Rublev candidly discussed his struggles with anxiety and depression. Throughout his career, he has reached the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments but has yet to advance beyond that stage.
