Former Nigerian Forward John Utaka named Montpellier Women’s Head Coach

Former Super Eagles striker John Utaka has been appointed as the new manager of Montpellier HSC’s women’s team, stepping in to replace outgoing boss Frédéric Mendy. The Nigerian will share coaching duties with Baptiste Merle until the end of the season, under the supervision of sporting director Jean-Louis Saez.

This appointment marks a major milestone for Utaka, who becomes the only African head coach in France’s top-tier women’s league.

Strong Montpellier Connection

Utaka is no stranger to Montpellier. During his playing days, he wrote himself into club history by scoring twice in the decisive match that sealed the men’s team’s 2011–12 Ligue 1 title, their first-ever French championship.

After retiring in 2018, the Enugu-born forward returned to Montpellier in 2020 as an attacking coach for the youth academy, before briefly taking charge of the women’s side in 2021. Most recently, he was assistant coach of the men’s U-19 team.

Coaching Journey

Since hanging up his boots, Utaka has pursued coaching full-time, earning his UEFA A Licence in 2022. His new challenge with Montpellier women arrives at a crucial stage of the campaign.

The team currently sits fifth in Division 1 Féminine with 27 points from 19 matches, trailing third-placed Bordeaux by 11 points, while PSG and Lyon continue to dominate the top spots.

Reunion with Onumonu

Utaka will also reunite with Ifeoma Onumonu, his compatriot and Super Falcons forward, who joined Montpellier earlier this year after winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Known for his composed leadership and attacking philosophy, Utaka enjoyed a globe-trotting playing career across Nigeria, Egypt, Qatar, France, England and Turkey. Now, Montpellier supporters will hope he can instil that same flair and discipline into the women’s team during the decisive run-in to the season.
