Former RFEF President Luis Rubiales banned from football for three years

Former Spanish Football Association (RFEF) President, Luis Rubiales, has received a three-year ban from FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, prohibiting him from engaging in any football-related activities, as announced by the world soccer governing body.
The suspension was the outcome of an incident involving an alleged non-consensual kiss Rubiales planted on Spanish player Jenni Hermoso following Spain's victory over England in the Women's World Cup final.
FIFA clarified that the suspension is connected to the occurrence during the FIFA Women’s World Cup final on August 20, 2023, for which Rubiales had initially faced a provisional suspension lasting 90 days.
Jenni Hermoso, the player at the center of the incident, had previously lodged a legal complaint regarding the unwelcome kiss.
This ban comes as a result of FIFA's actions, where Rubiales was initially suspended from football for a 90-day period on August 26. The suspension was implemented to safeguard an investigation concerning Rubiales' conduct during the Women's World Cup final.
Rubiales' behavior during the Women's World Cup final included kissing Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony in Sydney on August 20. Furthermore, he made an inappropriate gesture by grabbing his crotch to celebrate Spain's 1-0 victory over England and carried Spain player Athenea del Castillo over his shoulder during post-match celebrations.
Initially, Rubiales attempted to continue in his role but later resigned from the Spanish Football Association presidency and his position as a UEFA vice president. His actions led to a breach of Article 13 of the FIFA disciplinary code, resulting in this substantial ban.
Despite the ban, Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing and expressed his intention to appeal the decision.
In addition to the FIFA ban, Rubiales faces a criminal investigation in Spain. However, he firmly maintains his innocence in this matter. FIFA did not publicly disclose the specific details of the disciplinary committee's verdict.
In a statement, FIFA reiterated its dedication to upholding the integrity of all individuals and ensuring that fundamental standards of decent behavior are maintained. The decision, which remains open to possible appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee, exemplifies FIFA's commitment to preserving the principles of fair play and respect.
