France reach Olympic semi-finals after downing rivals Argentina

This will be their first semi-final appearance since 1984. Despite a history of competitive encounters, the first-ever Olympic match between the two sides carried extra tension due to recent controversies.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a perfectly placed header into the bottom corner following a corner delivery by Michael Olise, giving Thierry Henry’s team the lead.

Argentina looked increasingly exposed, but Les Bleus lacked clinical finishing. Teenage goalkeeper Guillaume Restes was untroubled for the first half-hour but had to tip over a long-range effort from Ezequiel Fernández.

Despite Argentina’s gradual ascendancy, the momentum clearly rested with the host nation. France not only had the home advantage but also carried impressive form, having netted six times in their previous three games. Mateta failed to add to that tally, missing an effort in the 69th minute.

France appeared to have extended their lead with a goal from Olise towards the end of the match, but referee Ilgiz Tantashev intervened after a VAR check, penalizing Maghnes Akliouche for a foul in the build-up play.

Despite the disallowed goal, France's strong defensive performance limited Argentina's chances and secured a fourth consecutive clean sheet victory.

The French team's goal of winning Olympic football gold as hosts is still within reach, but they will first need to overcome the challenge of an undefeated Egypt. Meanwhile, Argentina continues to struggle in Olympic football since their last gold medal 16 years ago in Beijing.
