Fred VanVleet Leads Rockets to 6th Consecutive Win with 107-104 Over Nuggets

The Houston Rockets secured their sixth straight win in a thrilling 107-104 triumph over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night, with Fred VanVleet and Alperen Sengun spearheading the team's efforts.
VanVleet, showcasing his scoring prowess, notched an impressive 26 points, complemented by Sengun's 23, as the Rockets battled to maintain their lead against the formidable Nuggets. The victory extends Houston's winning streak to six games, marking their most impressive run since January 2021.
Despite the Nuggets' loss, star player Nikola Jokic delivered a stellar performance, achieving his fourth triple-double of the season with an outstanding 36 points, 21 rebounds, and 11 assists. Jokic's late-game heroics included a pivotal 3-pointer that narrowed the gap to 103-102 with just 19.1 seconds remaining. However, his last-ditch effort for a full-court buzzer-beater fell short.
Entering the game with an 8-1 record, the Nuggets faced a resilient Rockets team that has significantly improved, now standing at 6-3 after an initial 0-3 start to the season.
Fred VanVleet shared his thoughts on the Rockets' progress, stating, “We’re getting better. We can feel the trend trending upward, we’re trying to get more things done that the coaches are asking us to do, and we’re executing at a higher and higher level each time out.”
Veteran player Jeff Green played a crucial role off the bench, contributing 15 points, including a pivotal 3-pointer with 1:49 left in the fourth quarter, pushing Houston's lead to 103-94. Green's experience and leadership were evident throughout the game as he provided valuable advice and defensive guidance.
Rockets coach Ime Udoka praised Green's contributions, noting, “He obviously made big shots and was attacking the basket. But also, all week, he had a ton of advice and experience, and he was out there being the quarterback on defense, calling out their sets and what they were getting into.”
The closely contested game saw Denver holding a slim 76-74 lead entering the fourth quarter. Alperen Sengun, with 23 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, showcased his versatility and impact on the court.
Jokic acknowledged Sengun's performance, stating, “I think it’s a good thing that they’re playing more through him. I think it’s going to benefit their whole organization. He’s a guy who is not selfish, he wants to play for the team, he wants to pass, and the whole team is going to move when the ball is in his hands. He played really good today.”
Despite the challenges of developing young players, Nuggets coach Mike Malone remained optimistic, saying, “The greatest challenge that we have is we’re trying to compete for a championship but also develop four young players off the bench.”
The victory marked Houston's second consecutive win against the Nuggets, breaking a 10-game losing streak. Udoka emphasized the significance of the win, stating, “It gives us another feather in our cap. It gives us experience with late-game execution and getting the shots we want and defending. I’m happy with how we finished.”
Looking ahead, the Nuggets are set to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night as part of the NBA In-Season Tournament play, while the Rockets will embark on a three-game California road trip, starting with the Clippers on Friday night.
