Freddie Freeman anticipates returning to the Dodgers' lineup for the World Series opener against the Yankees

Freddie Freeman is preparing to include himself in the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup for their World Series opener against the New York Yankees.

“I have no doubt that I will be part of the lineup for Game 1,” he stated during a Zoom news conference on Tuesday.

Ultimately, the final decision regarding the lineup will be made by manager Dave Roberts in consultation with the front office.

By the time Game 1 occurs on Friday, Freeman will have had a week to recover since injuring his right ankle while running in Game 5 of the NL Championship Series against the New York Mets.

The All-Star first baseman was unable to participate in Games 4 and 6 of the NLCS, finishing with a batting average of 3 for 18 against the Mets after previously hitting .286 in the NL Division Series against San Diego.

“I am clearly limited due to my ankle, so if I am not in the lineup that day, it means the best choice is with our other players,” Freeman remarked. “I haven’t played in three games, and I believe they are averaging about nine runs per game without me. I have great faith in my teammates.”

Freeman mentioned that he can hit and walk without discomfort, but his ankle becomes problematic when he attempts to run. He has been undergoing extensive treatment for the first sprained ankle of his lengthy career.

“I aim to reduce the swelling as much as possible to present my best self and be ready for Game 1,” he expressed.

In Freeman's absence, third baseman Max Muncy has transitioned to first base, while Kiké Hernández has taken over at third.

Freeman usually occupies the third spot in the batting order, following Shohei Ohtani at lead-off and Mookie Betts, thereby placing three former MVPs at the forefront of the lineup.

“You’re discussing one of the most reliable players in the game over the past decade or so,” Muncy commented. “Having him back in the lineup adds significant depth. Moreover, considering all the crucial hits he has delivered during this time of year throughout his career, it is difficult to quantify his value.”

Freeman sustained an ankle injury on September 26 during a game against the Padres while attempting to evade a tag at first base from San Diego's Luis Arráez, resulting in his absence from the Dodgers' final three regular-season matches.

Additionally, he was unavailable for eight games in late July to support his 3-year-old son, Maximus, who had been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition.
