Freeman shines as Dodgers defeat Yankees, move one step closer to World Series title

Freddie Freeman hit a home run for the third consecutive game, tying a record, as the Los Angeles Dodgers moved closer to securing a World Series title with a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday.

Freeman, who previously delivered a walk-off grand slam in the series opener in Los Angeles, launched a two-run homer in the first inning. Meanwhile, Walker Buehler pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, contributing to a win that puts the Dodgers ahead 3-0 in the best-of-seven series.

"We aimed to strike early in a hostile environment to silence the crowd, and we accomplished that in the first inning," Freeman remarked.

The Dodgers have the opportunity to clinch their first championship since 2020 by winning game four on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees enter this game aware that no team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win the World Series.

"Our focus is on winning tomorrow's game," stated Yankees manager Aaron Boone. "We hope to create an incredible narrative and surprise everyone."

"At this moment, our priority is to take the lead, secure a game, and extend the series from there," Boone added. "However, we must first win one."

Freeman's achievement places him alongside Hank Bauer in 1958 and Barry Bonds in 2002 as the only players to hit home runs in the first three games of a World Series.

Additionally, Freeman equaled George Springer's record for home runs in five consecutive World Series games.

Despite his personal accomplishments, Freeman expressed that his primary concern is the team's success.

"Ultimately, I can reflect on personal milestones later, but right now, the priority is securing one more win," Freeman stated. "The method of achieving it is irrelevant; I simply want that victory."

The Yankees have not experienced a World Series sweep since 1976, when they were defeated by Cincinnati. The last team to achieve a sweep in the World Series was San Francisco over Detroit in 2012.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts emphasized that his players are eager for a championship parade in Los Angeles, their first since 1988, especially after the pandemic disrupted celebrations in 2020.

The desire for that parade is strong. We have yet to experience a celebration alongside the city of Los Angeles, which serves as a significant motivation," he stated. "In addition to that, the chance to become a world champion is a compelling incentive and source of inspiration."

The Dodgers are aiming for their eighth World Series title, while the Yankees, who hold a record 27 championships, are pursuing their first title since 2009.

Ohtani excels beyond expectations
Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani experienced a partially dislocated left shoulder during Saturday's game two victory but returned to the leadoff position as designated hitter for game three.

The 30-year-old Japanese sensation walked on four pitches to begin the game and subsequently scored on Freeman's home run.

"They made some errors with the fastball, and he capitalized on them," Roberts remarked.

Ohtani achieved 54 home runs and stole 59 bases this season, becoming the first player in MLB history to reach the 50-50 milestone.

"Although he is not at his peak, any percentage of Shohei is superior to most," Roberts noted.

Tommy Edman crossed home plate in the third inning following a single by Mookie Betts, while Gavin Lux scored in the sixth inning on a single hit by Enrique Hernandez for the Dodgers.

Buehler, who has undergone "Tommy John" elbow ligament surgery on two occasions, recorded five strikeouts to secure the victory.

"It requires that adrenaline to truly engage me mentally," Buehler remarked. "There is a distinct atmosphere during the playoffs."

Roberts noted that the 30-year-old right-hander displayed his finest performance of the season.

"This is the most confident I have seen him," Roberts stated. "His pitches were as effective as they have been throughout the year."

Six relievers from the Dodgers held the Yankees scoreless until Alex Verdugo's two-run homer in the ninth inning marked their only runs.

"Most of their bullpen pitchers came in and threw numerous pitches," Boone commented. "I hope that this slight familiarity benefits us."
