Freiburg 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen: Draw hands Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich, Harry Kane wins first major trophy

Harry Kane has finally ended his long wait for silverware after Bayern Munich were officially crowned 2024/25 Bundesliga champions, following Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw at Freiburg on Sunday.

The result mathematically sealed Bayern’s record-extending 34th German league title, marking their 12th Bundesliga triumph in the past 13 seasons. For England captain Kane, it’s a first-ever major team trophy in a professional career that has spanned over 15 seasons.

Leverkusen’s Comeback Not Enough to Stop Bayern’s Coronation

Bayer Leverkusen, the defending champions, needed all three points to keep their faint title hopes alive. However, they were held to a draw by a spirited Freiburg side fighting for a Champions League spot.

The match began with Freiburg dominating the first half, taking the lead in the 44th minute with a thunderous 25-yard strike from Maximilian Eggestein. Just three minutes into the second half, Leverkusen’s troubles worsened when Piero Hincapie inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving Freiburg a commanding 2-0 advantage.

Still, Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen showed resilience. Rising star Florian Wirtz pulled one back in the 82nd minute, and in the dying moments, a low cross from Nathan Tella deflected off Jonathan Tah’s shoulder for a dramatic 93rd-minute equaliser.

But the comeback came too late. Leverkusen, now eight points behind Bayern Munich with only two matches remaining, surrendered their grip on the Bundesliga title.

Kane’s Wait for a Trophy Finally Ends

The title clinch has huge personal significance for Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich last summer from Tottenham Hotspur in search of silverware. Despite scoring prolifically for club and country, the 31-year-old had yet to lift a major trophy—until now.

Kane has been a standout performer this season, netting 24 Bundesliga goals in 29 appearances, and adding to his impressive tally of individual honors, which include multiple Golden Boots, a World Cup Golden Boot, and status as England’s all-time top goalscorer.

Prior to this, Kane had suffered near misses in key finals — notably the 2019 UEFA Champions League final with Spurs and the Euro 2021 and 2024 finals with England.

Bayern’s Key Weekend: Leipzig Draw and Leverkusen Slip

Bayern Munich had already set themselves up for the title celebration with a 3-3 draw away at RB Leipzig on Saturday. That result left the door open for Leverkusen to keep the race alive, but the draw in Freiburg sealed it — confirming Vincent Kompany’s Bayern as champions in his first season at the helm.

The title also enhances Kompany’s reputation, as he becomes one of the few former Premier League captains to achieve league success as a manager in another top European competition.
