French Open 2025: Novak Djokovic cruises into second round with straight-sets victory

Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title with a clinical straight-sets win over Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday.
The sixth seed, fresh off celebrating his 100th career title in Geneva, dispatched the American 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in just under two hours on Court Philippe Chatrier, marking a confident start to his Roland Garros campaign.
Djokovic on track for Grand Slam history
With Tuesday’s win, Djokovic took another step toward surpassing Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles. A fourth French Open crown would not only solidify his place in history but also extend his dominance across all four major tournaments.
Despite being 38 years old, Djokovic showed few signs of slowing down. His precision, court coverage, and mental resilience were on full display against world number 98 McDonald.
“I don’t know how many more Grand Slams I’ve got left in my body,” Djokovic said in a post-match interview. “But I’m motivated, and as long as the fire burns, I’ll keep competing.”
The only blemish in an otherwise commanding performance came late in the second set. Leading 5-2, Djokovic failed to serve it out, dropping the game. However, the Serb broke back immediately to clinch the set and carried the momentum into the third for a comfortable finish.
Djokovic’s ability to refocus swiftly is a testament to the mental edge that has defined his career. “There are always doubts, always challenges," he admitted during the press conference. “But what keeps me going are my goals — history, records, and the love of the sport.”
Next Up: Moutet or Tabur
The three-time French Open winner will now face the winner of an all-French showdown between Corentin Moutet and Clément Tabur in the second round.
With Rafael Nadal making an early exit and Carlos Alcaraz still finding rhythm, Djokovic’s path to the title looks increasingly promising. The veteran will look to capitalize on his experience and consistency as the tournament progresses.
While Djokovic has not lifted a Grand Slam since his US Open triumph two years ago, his longevity and commitment to elite performance remain unmatched in modern tennis. His physical preparation, mental toughness, and hunger for records continue to drive him.
“I respect the process, every step of the preparation, every small detail,” Djokovic emphasized. “That’s what allows me to still play at this level.”
As the French Open unfolds, all eyes will be on the Serbian maestro, who remains one of the most formidable forces in tennis — even in the twilight of his career.
