Fritz donates prize money to LA fire victims after defeating Garin

American tennis player Taylor Fritz, currently ranked fourth in the world, announced on Thursday his intention to donate the $82,000 he earned from his first-round victory at the Australian Open to assist those affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles, describing the destruction as "insane."
Fritz, a California resident, made this commitment after advancing to the third round in Melbourne by defeating Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin with a score of 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.
The prize money for the first round amounts to Aus$132,000 (£67,000).
"I want everyone to stay safe; what has occurred is truly insane," Fritz remarked.
"I will be donating my first-round prize money to support LA wildfire relief efforts.
"This is the least I can do. Southern California is my home, and I have spent a significant amount of time in LA.
"I am simply doing what I can to assist, and I urge anyone else who is able to contribute to do so, as many people are in dire need."
The catastrophic fires, which began over a week ago, have been exacerbated by hurricane-force winds, resulting in the loss of two dozen lives and extensive destruction across the city.
Other players, including Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, and Jessica Pegula, have also expressed their shock and commended the firefighters for their dedication.
Former LA resident Keys contributed $20,000 to the city's fire department "to support the incredibly brave firefighters working tirelessly to protect the community."
Pegula, who founded the dog rescue charity A Lending Paw, has been actively sharing information on how to assist the numerous animals displaced by the fires with her followers online.
Naomi Osaka, who represents Japan but resides in Los Angeles, mentioned on Monday that the wildfires were "three blocks" away from her home.
