Fulham 1-2 Chelsea: Pedro Neto’s late winner lifts Blues over Cottagers to boost Champions League push

Pedro Neto struck deep into stoppage time as Chelsea secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday, reviving their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. The hard-fought victory lifted Chelsea to fifth place in the Premier League table on 57 points, level with Nottingham Forest, who face Tottenham Hotspur on Monday. Fulham, meanwhile, remain ninth with 48 points.
Chelsea’s top-five ambitions received a significant boost thanks to their resilience and late-game heroics. Reflecting on the turnaround, Neto said: "I think it could be a big part of the season for us. We showed character. To be honest, I have no words. It is not easy to spend all season in the top four and we were out before this game. The character the team showed, we now need to think about Everton... The belief has always been there, even in the bad moments."
Fulham came out firing and nearly grabbed the lead in the third minute when Andreas Pereira found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Chelsea responded with attacking intent, creating several chances from wide positions, but lacked the finishing touch early on.
The breakthrough came for the hosts in the 20th minute when Chelsea captain Reece James lost possession to Ryan Sessegnon, who set up Alex Iwobi for a precise low drive into the bottom corner from just outside the area.
Looking to shift momentum, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca introduced Malo Gusto and Jadon Sancho at halftime. Sancho was especially energetic down the left, while Gusto tested Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno from range. Neto and Sancho continued to threaten, but Fulham’s compact defensive shape held firm for much of the second half.
Just when Fulham appeared on course for a rare league double over their West London rivals, substitute Tyrique George popped up in the 83rd minute to level the score with an instinctive finish—his first Premier League goal. Chelsea kept the pressure on and were rewarded in stoppage time when Neto spun into space and blasted home the winner, sparking wild celebrations among the away supporters.
Fulham manager Marco Silva lamented his team’s second-half drop-off: "Unfortunately for us, we wanted to start the second half in the same way and were not able to connect come passes. Our build-up was not at the same level. They started to play in our half. I really believe the result is very harsh for us but the second half was not our level and we lost the game."
The result ended Chelsea’s eight-match winless run away from Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, with their last away victory coming against Tottenham Hotspur in early December.
