FULL FIXTURES: Bayern Munich host Chelsea in Champions League opener

The UEFA Champions League returns this week, and one of the standout fixtures of the opening round will see Bayern Munich host Chelsea in a clash brimming with history and storylines. Over a decade since Chelsea shocked Bayern in their own backyard in the 2012 final, the two European giants meet again at the Allianz Arena, this time with both sides carrying ambitions of a deep run and perhaps another shot at the trophy.
For Bayern, the tie comes at a time of major transition. Following a turbulent summer that saw Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and Mathys Tel all depart, the Bavarian giants have had to quickly adapt. In came Luis Díazfrom Liverpool and Nicolas Jackson on loan from Chelsea, two fresh faces expected to shoulder attacking responsibility alongside Harry Kane, Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise.
Compounding matters, Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies are sidelined with long-term injuries, leaving Bayern exposed in key areas. Kane, never one for controversy, admitted bluntly that Bayern’s current roster feels “thin” compared to other squads he has played in during his career.
Despite those concerns, Díaz has made an immediate impact. The Colombian winger has four goals and two assists in his first five games, quickly winning over fans and offering the pace and creativity needed to fill the void left by Coman and Sané.
Chelsea bring confidence after Club World Cup triumph
While Bayern adjust to change, Chelsea arrive with momentum, having recently lifted the FIFA Club World Cup after a dominant performance against Paris Saint-Germain just two months ago. The Blues, themselves in a phase of renewal under fresh leadership, see this as a chance to assert their credentials early in the season.
Bayern may still be viewed as favorites to advance from the group stage, but Chelsea’s physicality, squad depth, and newfound attacking rhythm suggest they will provide a far sterner test than recent domestic opposition.
Harry Kane’s warning: “We can’t afford a slow start”
The importance of opening well is not lost on Bayern’s captain and talisman. Kane reflected on last season’s struggles, when Bayern finished outside the top eight and were forced into a draining two-legged playoff against Celtic, narrowly scraping through 3–2 on aggregate.
“Playing that Celtic game home and away during our busiest period made a big difference,” Kane admitted. “It took a toll and we lost a few players to injury in March. It’s important to be in the top eight and avoid that situation again. Starting strong this year is crucial.”
Nicolas Jackson’s “super-sub” challenge
One of the most intriguing subplots involves Nicolas Jackson, who joined Bayern on loan from Chelsea this summer. Jackson made his debut off the bench at the weekend and is unlikely to start against his parent club. Still, Kane was quick to defend his new teammate, saying:
“I don’t see him as a back-up. He’s versatile, he can play across the front four, and there will be games where we play together. He’s here to help us, not just to fill in.”
Jackson’s role is reminiscent of Claudio Pizarro, the Peruvian forward who became a cult hero in Munich despite often being used as a super-sub behind the likes of Mario Gomez, Mario Mandzukic and Robert Lewandowski. Speaking to reporters, Pizarro acknowledged the difficulty of that position but insisted it can spark internal competition and raise performance levels across the squad.
“In my time at Bayern, I knew my job, come in, score goals, be ready when called upon,” Pizarro said. “It’s a hard role, but it can drive the team forward. Look at Robben and Ribéry, their rivalry pushed us to the treble in 2013.”

What’s at stake
For Bayern, this is more than just a nostalgic rematch of the 2012 final. It’s a test of resilience for a squad in transition and a chance to prove that Harry Kane and Luis Díaz can lead a reshaped attack at the highest level. For Chelsea, it’s an opportunity to build on their Club World Cup success and show they are ready to challenge Europe’s elite again.
One thing is certain: the Allianz Arena will host a clash that could set the tone for the rest of the Champions League campaign.
