Gabriel Jesus regains goalscoring touch at the perfect moment for Arsenal as Bukayo Saka faces injury blow

An injury to Bukayo Saka prior to a demanding festive schedule overshadowed Arsenal's commanding 5-1 victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

However, if manager Mikel Arteta harbored concerns regarding Saka's condition, the impressive performance of Gabriel Jesus provided a measure of reassurance.

Leading up to Wednesday's League Cup quarter-final against Palace, the former Manchester City striker had managed to find the net only once in his last 33 outings for Arsenal. Nevertheless, the Brazilian delivered a remarkable hat-trick in a 3-2 triumph earlier in the week and continued his fine form by scoring twice more at Selhurst Park, bringing Arsenal to within three points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Should Saka, who has been Arsenal's standout player this season, face an extended absence due to a hamstring injury, the presence of an in-form Jesus will be crucial.

"He has certainly found his rhythm, which was essential for restoring his confidence and belief," Arteta remarked. "Scoring five goals in two matches is a significant achievement in football. He has accomplished this impressively, so let us maintain this momentum."

Saka, who has netted five goals and provided ten assists in the Premier League this season, left the field midway through the first half and exited the stadium on crutches, raising serious concerns about his availability for the upcoming holiday fixtures.

"It is challenging to make an accurate assessment at this moment. They have conducted tests, but it is difficult to determine the severity of the injury," Arteta commented.

Jesus appears revitalized after a period of goal drought. He opened the scoring just six minutes into the match and followed up with a powerful shot into the top corner shortly thereafter, regaining Arsenal's lead after Ismaila Sarr had equalized.

He nearly achieved consecutive hat-tricks when his header struck the post, allowing Kai Havertz to score and extend the lead to 3-1 before halftime. He should have added to his tally in the second half but missed a close-range opportunity just before Gabriel Martinelli scored to make it 4-1.

"At one point, I felt the pressure, but I never questioned my abilities," Jesus stated in an interview with the BBC. "I always believed I could score goals. When facing a challenging period, it is essential to maintain a strong mindset, and that is what I endeavored to do."

At times, I am aware that after playing, I depart with a smile, and everything feels transformed. This is because I hold a deep gratitude for God; His greatness in my life is undeniable, and I recognize that I could not achieve this without His support.
