Galatasaray claim upper hand over Sparta Prague after thriller

Galatasaray emerged victorious over Sparta Prague with a 3-2 scoreline in their inaugural head-to-head encounter since 1997. This notable win secures a narrow advantage for Galatasaray in the opening leg of their UEFA Europa League (UEL) play-off round clash.
Sparta had a strong start to the game, but they were missing a goal. Qazim Laçi missed a chance to score from Jan Kuchta's cross, and Veljko Birmančević's shot was saved by Fernando Muslera.
However, Galatasaray soon gained momentum, with Mauro Icardi making a great pass to Kerem Aktürkoğlu, who was stopped by Ladislav Krejčí's impressive defending.
Demirbay then scored for Galatasaray, taking advantage of a defensive lapse. Sparta faced criticism from their fans and had a few missed opportunities.
Sparta started the second half strongly and Ángelo Preciado scored a brilliant goal to equalize. However, Galatasaray quickly regained the lead through Dries Mertens, assisted by Icardi.
Sparta's hopes were revived when Victor Nelsson was sent off, and Kuchta scored from a Preciado cross. Lucas Torreira came close to scoring, but his header was saved. In the 80th minute,
Sparta's Matěj Ryneš was shown a second yellow card, reducing their numbers on the pitch. After Muslera's brave save and Tomáš Wiesner's missed chance, Icardi secured the win for Galatasaray.
Despite the disappointment of a late defeat, Sparta still remain strong contenders in the competition, having emerged victorious in 11 out of their last 12 home matches.
