Galatasaray deal massive blow to Fenerbahce with big derby win

Galatasaray inflicted a significant defeat on their arch-rivals Fenerbahce in the opening stages of the Super Lig season.

At the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, which reportedly reached full capacity in just four seconds, the reigning champions triumphed with a score of 3-1 in the highly anticipated Intercontinental Derby against Jose Mourinho's side.

Entering the match as league leaders with a flawless record of five victories from five matches, Galatasaray held a two-point advantage over Fenerbahce, who had previously secured a 1-0 victory in the last derby held at Galatasaray's home ground last season.

Mourinho's team began the match positively, generating numerous scoring opportunities. However, it was Galatasaray that struck first, with Lucas Torreira, a former Arsenal player, unleashing a powerful volley from distance that found its way into the net via the arm of goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

The contest, characterized by its intensity and featuring nine yellow cards, saw the second goal arrive within the first half-hour. Victor Osimhen assisted Dries Mertens, who deftly lifted the ball over Livakovic, thereby extending Galatasaray's lead.

Ineffective Fenerbahce
Following the interval, Galatasaray took just 15 minutes to add a third goal, resulting from a well-executed interplay between Gabriel Sara and Torreira, culminating in a fine finish by the Brazilian, Sara.

Edin Dzeko managed to convert a penalty to reduce the deficit after a contentious decision, but it proved insufficient as Fenerbahce faced a damaging loss in the 401st Intercontinental Derby between these two prominent Turkish clubs.

Galatasaray concluded the previous Super Lig season with a record-breaking 102 points, while Fenerbahce finished closely behind with 99 points, a tally that would have secured the title in any other season in the history of the Super Lig.
