Galatasaray 1–0 Liverpool: Lemina strike gives Turkish giants UCL advantage

Galatasaray claimed a valuable 1–0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash on Tuesday night, leaving the Premier League side with a deficit to overturn in next week’s return fixture at Anfield.
An early goal from Mario Lemina proved decisive in a tense encounter at RAMS Park in Istanbul, where the home side capitalised on Liverpool’s defensive vulnerability and relentless pressure from the stands.
The result also means Liverpool have now lost twice this season away to Galatasaray by the same 1–0 scoreline, underlining the difficulty of playing in the hostile Turkish atmosphere.
Who scored in Galatasaray match today?
Galatasaray made a dream start when Lemina opened the scoring in the eighth minute. The Gabon international reacted quickly inside the penalty area, powering a header beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili after being set up by a headed pass from Victor Osimhen.
The goal marked Lemina’s first-ever strike in the Champions League, coming in his 24th appearance in the competition. It was also only his third goal in 76 appearances for Galatasaray, making the moment even more significant for the midfielder.

Osimhen causes constant problems
Although he did not get on the scoresheet, Osimhen once again proved influential in Galatasaray’s attack. The Nigerian forward troubled Liverpool’s central defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté throughout the match with his movement, physicality and aerial threat.
Osimhen thought he had doubled Galatasaray’s lead shortly after the hour mark, only for the assistant referee’s offside flag to cut short his celebrations. Despite the disallowed goal, his performance played a major role in unsettling Liverpool’s defensive structure.
VAR denies Liverpool late equaliser
Liverpool believed they had found a crucial equaliser in the second half when the ball eventually found its way into the net following a set-piece scramble. However, a lengthy VAR review ruled out the goal, leaving the visitors frustrated and preserving Galatasaray’s narrow lead.
Statistically the contest was evenly balanced, with both teams producing 15 shots each, but Galatasaray created the more dangerous moments and looked the more threatening side going forward.

Arne Slot Calls for Anfield Response
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his side were frustrated with the result but insisted the tie remains far from decided. Speaking after the match, the Dutch coach urged supporters to create a powerful atmosphere for the return leg.
“You play two games against each other and now it's half-time, they are 1–0 up,” Slot said. “We can do better, I’m 100 per cent sure about that. Next week we play at Anfield and our fans will be so supportive.”
Slot’s side have struggled defensively at times this season, and the Istanbul defeat exposed some of those familiar issues again. The match also marked Slot’s 100th game in charge of Liverpool, leaving him level with club legend Kenny Dalglish on 62 wins after a century of matches.
Despite the defeat, Liverpool remain confident of turning the tie around in the second leg. The Reds created several promising opportunities but lacked the clinical edge required to break down Galatasaray’s defence.
With the return match scheduled for next week at Anfield, Liverpool will rely heavily on their home crowd to replicate the intimidating atmosphere that proved so influential in Istanbul. Galatasaray, however, have built a reputation for resilience in European knockout ties and will travel to England believing they can finish the job.
