Gattuso sacked by Marseille, Gasset hired as replacement

Marseille fired Gennaro Gattuso after failing to win a league match in 2024, and the south coast club have appointed Jean-Louis Gasset as interim manager.

The developments follow Marseille's 1-0 loss to Ligue 1 surprise package Brest on Sunday.

Marseille hired Gattuso, 46, in September after the previous incumbent, Marcelinho, resigned just three months into his tenure for personal reasons.

"Olympique de Marseille announces the end of its collaboration with Gennaro Gattuso," Marseille said in a statement.

"Marseille would like to extend its special thanks to Gennaro and his entire staff for the unfailing commitment and professionalism they have shown on a daily basis, and wishes them all the best for the future."

Gasset was fired by the Ivory Coast during their successful Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Gattuso led the club to the Europa League play-off round, but they have struggled recently. Their only win in 2024 came in the Coupe de France, where they defeated fifth-tier side US Thionville Lusitanos 1-0. Their last Ligue 1 victory was on December 17 against Clermont Foot.

Their poor performance has dropped them to ninth in the table. They are eight points behind Monaco, who are fifth in Europe, and a further point behind Nice, who are third in the Champions League standings.

Gasset will become Marseille's fifth manager in three years, following Jorge Sampaoli, Igor Tudor, Marcelinho, and now Gattuso, all of whom struggled to stay on the French south coast.

"It's a huge honour for me to be joining this legendary club, Olympique de Marseille," Gasset told the club website.

"I can't wait to start working with this group to prepare for the upcoming fixtures and give the best of ourselves."

The new manager's first assignment will be a UEFA Europa League knockout round play-off second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk at home on February 22 following a 2-2 draw the week before.

On Sunday, February 25, Marseille will host Montpellier.
