Gauff breezes past Cocciaretto into French Open quarters

In the French Open on Sunday, Coco Gauff, the American world number three, displayed her dominance against Italian player Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Gauff secured a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory, propelling her into the quarter-finals.

The match commenced with an intense pace, as Cocciaretto, ranked 45th, struggled to gain momentum, committing unforced errors that allowed Gauff to swiftly claim the first four games.

Despite Cocciaretto's efforts to regain confidence towards the end of the first set, Gauff maintained control, conceding only one game to her Italian counterpart.

Although Gauff faced a minor setback in the second set, losing her initial service game and providing an opportunity for Cocciaretto to retaliate, she ultimately prevailed.

Gauff's first serve accuracy stood at 56%, highlighting her resilience and determination throughout the match.

Cocciaretto was able to secure a victory in one of her service games, but it was insufficient to overcome Gauff, who wrapped up the match in precisely one hour.

Gauff expressed her satisfaction with her performance today, highlighting that her previous match against Cocciaretto in Dubai was more challenging.

She emphasized the importance of applying the lessons learned from that match in her current performance.

Having reached the semi-finals in Rome and losing only 18 games so far, Gauff expressed her contentment with her strong start at Roland Garros.

She acknowledged that the beginning of a tournament does not always determine the outcome, citing her experience in Rome where she initially felt unwell but ended up pleased with her game.

Despite the challenging wet and humid weather conditions in Paris this week, Gauff mentioned that she has been managing well and playing effectively.

She noted that the slow and muggy weather might naturally affect the players' energy levels before a match.

Looking ahead to the quarter-final, Gauff, aiming to become the first American to win Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2015, will compete against the winner of the match between Tunisia's Ons Jabeur and Dane Clara Tauson.
