Gauff has 'things to improve' after season-opening win in Auckland

In her first match of the season, US Open champion Gauff emerged victorious with a 6-4, 6-2 win. Despite facing a tough opponent, second-seed Elina Svitolina managed to overcome Caroline Wozniacki with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in a battle between two comeback moms.

Gauff, currently ranked third in the world, quickly took control of the match against Liu, who is ranked 92 places lower. She surged ahead with a 4-0 lead, but then experienced a slight dip in her performance.

After double-faulting twice and losing her serve, Gauff's lead narrowed to 5-4 as Liu broke back. However, the 19-year-old regained her composure and clinched the first set when Liu's forehand went wide.

In the second set, Gauff broke Liu's serve twice from a 3-2 advantage, securing her spot in the second round where she will face 16-year-old Czech player Brenda Fruhvirtova.

Gauff expressed her satisfaction with her performance as she commenced her preparations for the Australian Open, which is set to begin on January 14th.

Despite committing four double faults and having a first serve success rate of only 65 percent, Gauff believed that she played well in her first match after a considerable break. She acknowledged that there are areas for improvement but expressed contentment with her victory.

In a separate match, Svitolina and Wozniacki, both of whom made their return to the circuit last year following maternity leave, engaged in a battle that lasted for one hour and 45 minutes. Ultimately, Svitolina emerged as the victor.

Svitolina initially won the first two games, but Wozniacki fought back and took a 4-3 lead. However, Svitolina managed to break Wozniacki's serve and claim the first set with a score of 6-4.

In the second set, Svitolina established a 4-1 advantage, but Wozniacki displayed resilience by winning the subsequent two games. Nevertheless, Svitolina regained control and secured the victory.

Svitolina expressed her delight after securing a remarkable victory against Caroline, emphasizing the significance of this win for her.

Svitolina, who took a break for a year to start a family, acknowledged Wozniacki's absence for nearly three years and appreciated her return to the game.

Svitolina eagerly awaits her upcoming match in the second round, where she will face either Emma Raducanu, the former US Open champion from Britain, or Elena-Gabriela Ruse from Spain.

In a remarkable comeback, Petra Martic, the seventh seed from Croatia, overcame a slow start where she lost her opening serve and the first set.

She managed to defeat Rebeka Masarova of Spain, last year's beaten finalist in Auckland, with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
