Gauff knocked out of US Open by Navarro after serving horror show

Defending champion Coco Gauff, aged 20, was eliminated from the US Open in the fourth round on Sunday by fellow American Emma Navarro, who is 23, following a dismal serving performance.

Navarro, seeded 13th, capitalized on Gauff's staggering 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors, securing victory with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, and earning a place in the quarter-finals against Spain's Paula Badosa.

Gauff's loss signifies that Serena Williams remains the last woman to have successfully defended the US Open title, achieving this feat in 2014.

Navarro had previously triumphed over Gauff at Wimbledon in July and displayed her dominance once more from the outset of the match on Sunday.

The New Yorker broke Gauff's serve to lead 4-2 in the first set and clinched the opener in the ninth game, which featured a remarkable rally lasting 27 shots.

Gauff struggled with 21 unforced errors, in stark contrast to Navarro's mere eight.

Navarro took a 4-3 lead in the second set after breaking Gauff, who had already committed her eighth double fault of the match.

Nevertheless, Gauff, who had previously dropped the first set in her third-round match against Elina Svitolina, responded by winning the next three games to level the match.

Unfortunately for the 20-year-old, this was only a temporary reprieve, as she served three additional double faults in the third game of the deciding set, allowing Navarro to regain the advantage.

There was no recovery for the reigning champion, as Navarro advanced to the quarter-finals of her home tournament for the first time.
