Gauff maintains perfect record at Australian Open in win over Frech

Coco Gauff, the fourth seed, expressed her satisfaction in avoiding yet another intense battle at the Grand Slam as she secured her spot in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the first time. The American player achieved this milestone with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Magdalena Frech from Poland on Sunday.
The US Open champion, who remains undefeated in sets at the Melbourne Park major this year, swiftly broke her unseeded opponent in the first game at a chilly Rod Laver Arena and maintained control throughout the match.
Although Gauff has experienced a relatively smooth journey through the initial rounds in Melbourne, her path to last year's Flushing Meadows final was marked by intense three-set battles before securing her first Grand Slam title.
"I would prefer for every match to be relatively easy, but I understand that's not always the case," Gauff expressed. "During the US Open, each match I won was a grueling fight."
"I'm not sure if that's the ideal way to win a Slam because you have to endure seven matches. However, I believe I possess the physical and mental strength to accomplish that."
"My goal has always been to improve my performance in the early rounds. Not necessarily to make them easier, but to win them in straight sets and minimize the strain on my mind and body."
Despite being just 19 years old, Gauff is already contemplating her longevity in the sport.
"In the future, I may not be able to recover as quickly physically or mentally," she acknowledged. "I view this as preparation for what lies ahead. Everything I do is with the intention of prolonging my career."
With tennis legend Rod Laver observing from the stands, Gauff concluded the match in just over an hour, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. Her next opponent will be the unseeded Ukrainian player, Marta Kostyuk, who defeated Russian qualifier Maria Timofeeva.
Gauff, who successfully defended her Auckland title prior to the start of the Grand Slam, displayed flawless play from the baseline and during her ventures to the net. She quickly gained a 5-1 lead and clinched the first set when her opponent made a forehand error.
The American faced a slightly tougher challenge in the following set as her 26-year-old opponent aimed to prolong the rallies. However, Gauff managed to break her opponent's serve to take a 3-1 lead and capitalized on her advantage, extending her unbeaten streak in 2024 to nine matches.
Gauff stated that regardless of whether she has had a lengthy match in the previous round or not, she will maintain the same level of competitiveness and feel equally sharp when it's crunch time.
