Gauff prioritizes Australian Open, skips Auckland to compete in United Cup

World number three Coco Gauff (20) announced on Friday her decision to commence her season at the United Cup rather than her favored venue in Auckland, citing the event's superior level of competition and the opportunity to participate in a team setting once more.
Gauff, who has claimed victory in the last two Australian Open preparatory tournaments held in Auckland, is representing the United States team at the United Cup, scheduled from December 27th to January 5th in Perth and Sydney.
"I have a great affection for Auckland. I have won there twice, and it is a wonderful tournament," remarked the 2023 US Open champion during a press conference.
"My preference was to engage in a higher level of competition and also to experience team dynamics.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the Paris Olympics. The season often feels solitary, so it is refreshing to have a change of pace.
"I believe our primary objective is the Australian Open and achieving success there."
The United States will begin their journey in the $10 million mixed team event in Perth against Canada on Sunday, followed by a match against Croatia on December 31st.
The Australian Open is set to commence on January 12th, where Gauff aims to enhance her performance following her semi-final appearance in the 2024 tournament.
