Gauff Rallies to Beat Badosa, Sets Up China Open Final Showdown with Muchova

Gauff secured her spot in the final with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory, setting up a highly anticipated clash with Czech star Karolina Muchova.

Currently ranked sixth in the world, Gauff had a challenging start to the match, struggling with double faults and a shaky second serve. Badosa capitalized, winning 75% of her second return points in the opening set and breaking Gauff’s serve to go ahead 3-2. However, Gauff fought back, eventually leveling the score at 4-4 after a marathon game in which Badosa saved ten break points before Gauff finally prevailed.

Badosa briefly regained momentum with a quick break in the following game to take the first set, but Gauff responded with determination. Despite a break of serve in the opening game of the second set, Gauff saved four break points and shifted into another gear. Her improved accuracy and aggressive play saw her dominate the remainder of the set, breaking Badosa in the final game to level the match.

In the decisive third set, Gauff took control, breaking Badosa’s serve twice to build a commanding 4-1 lead. Powerful forehands and two aces left the Spaniard increasingly fatigued as Gauff sealed the victory with another service break.

"It was a tough match... I just tried to stay focused and reset mentally," Gauff said in her post-match interview. "I’ve had tough opponents throughout the tournament, and I’m happy to be in the final."

In the other semi-final, Karolina Muchova cruised past Chinese fifth seed Zheng Qinwen, winning 6-3, 6-4. Muchova, ranked 49th in the world, capitalized after Zheng suffered a fall in the first set and required a medical timeout. Despite some resistance from Zheng in the second set, Muchova maintained control, advancing to her sixth WTA final.

Muchova’s impressive run comes in just her seventh tournament back from a wrist injury sustained at the 2023 US Open. The Czech player recently reached the semi-finals of the US Open and knocked out top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the China Open quarter-finals, ending the Belarusian’s 15-match winning streak.

Gauff and Muchova will now face off in what promises to be an exciting final.
