Gauff Reaches First US Open Semifinal at 19, Djokovic Advances to 13th

Coco Gauff showcased her prowess under challenging conditions at the U.S. Open, defeating Jelena Ostapenko 6-0, 6-2 to secure a spot in the semifinals, marking her first appearance at this stage in the tournament at just 19 years old. Gauff's victory is significant, as she becomes the first American teenager to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2001.
"I lost in the quarterfinal stage last year, and I wanted to do better this year," said Gauff, reflecting on her impressive performance. "Still have a long way to go, but I'm happy and ready to get back to work for the next one."
This win marks Gauff's 16th victory in her last 17 matches, an impressive feat considering her early exit at Wimbledon in July. Her best Grand Slam showing prior to this was reaching the final at Roland Garros last year.
Ostapenko, known for her aggressive playing style, proved a challenging opponent. When she finds her rhythm, her powerful shots can be formidable, but they can also lead to numerous unforced errors, which was the case in Tuesday's match. Gauff, on the other hand, displayed consistent play and defense, forcing Ostapenko into making more mistakes.
In the semifinals, Gauff will face either No. 10 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic or No. 30 Sorana Cirstea of Romania. The outcome of their match was scheduled for Tuesday night.
In the men's quarterfinal, held under a partly closed Arthur Ashe Stadium roof to provide some respite from the sweltering heat and humidity, 23-time major champion Novak Djokovic secured a comprehensive victory over No. 9 Taylor Fritz of the United States, with a final score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. This win marks Djokovic's 13th appearance in the U.S. Open semifinals and his 47th Grand Slam semifinal overall, surpassing Roger Federer's record.

Djokovic will await the winner of the match between No. 10 Frances Tiafoe and unseeded Ben Shelton in the next round. This year's U.S. Open is notable for having three American men in the final eight for the first time since 2005.
Throughout her journey at the U.S. Open, Gauff enjoyed tremendous support from the pro-American crowd. Their applause and cheers filled the stadium, even before the match began when Gauff was featured on the arena's video screens during a pre-match TV interview.
Gauff got off to an impressive start, seizing a 3-0 lead in just 10 minutes, aided by Ostapenko's numerous unforced errors. Gauff's exemplary defense played a crucial role in extending points until her opponent faltered. Gauff's performance demonstrates her improvements in both offense and defense, making her a formidable contender in the tournament.
Unlike many of her previous matches, this one never seemed to head towards a three-set battle, as Gauff dominated throughout.
