Gavi suffers knee injury in 3-1 Euro Qualifying Win over Georgia

In the culminating Group A match for Euro 2024 qualifying, Spain clinched a 3-1 triumph against Georgia, painting a bittersweet narrative for the hosts. The victory, securing their position at the top, was shadowed by a heart-wrenching moment when the 19-year-old midfielder Gavi, representing Barcelona, suffered a knee injury, dampening the celebration.

Spain's journey through the qualifiers had been dominant, amassing 21 points from seven wins out of eight matches. Their sole defeat had been against Scotland, who also secured a berth in the finals with 17 points after a 3-3 draw against Norway.

Despite their valiant efforts, Georgia concluded fourth with eight points, narrowly trailing behind Norway, while Cyprus languished at the bottom without a single point.

For the Spanish coach, Luis de la Fuente, the victory tasted bitter due to Gavi's agonizing departure from the field, tearfully clutching his injured knee during the initial half of the game. Addressing the media, De la Fuente expressed the profound sorrow felt by the team, Barcelona, and himself, equating the setback to losing the match itself.

"This is the harsh reality of football. It's truly disheartening. We're awaiting test results to ascertain the gravity of the injury. This victory is perhaps the most bitter experience of my entire career," lamented De la Fuente.

The match's narrative unfolded swiftly, with Spain seizing the lead in the fourth minute as Robin Le Normand netted his debut international goal, nodding in a free kick from Ferran Torres on the left flank. Georgia swiftly retaliated six minutes later through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's composed finish following a rapid counter.

The mood in Spain's camp darkened further as Gavi succumbed to injury in a collision with an opponent, overshadowing the joy of the game for his teammates.

"We can't fully relish this win. Gavi's injury is devastating; it's a real blow," expressed Le Normand, reflecting on the game and his teammate's misfortune. "Personally, it wasn't my best performance with the national team. There's room for improvement."

Spain managed to reclaim the lead ten minutes into the second half with Torres heading in a goal, an emotional tribute to his injured teammate by displaying Gavi's number nine Barcelona jersey during the celebration. A stroke of misfortune for Georgia occurred in the 72nd minute when Luka Lochoshvili accidentally put the ball into his own net, sealing Spain's victory.

"Securing this crucial win is a positive note to conclude on, but the shadow of Gavi's injury leaves us with mixed emotions," remarked Torres. "The extent of the injury remains unknown, but considering Gavi's resilience, we fear it might be severe."
