Genoa 0-2 Lazio: Biancocelesti boost top-four hopes after snapping La Superba's unbeaten home run

Top-four contenders SS Lazio ended Genoa's unbeaten home run in 2025, which had lasted six matches, with a well-deserved 2-0 victory at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
This win was particularly significant as it marked only their second triumph in six Serie A matches. With Genoa aiming for their first top-half finish in Serie A in a decade, they aggressively challenged Lazio from the outset.
Unfortunately for Sebastian Otoa, he was overly eager to make an impact, tripping Mattia Zaccagni and leaving him injured. After a five-minute delay due to flare smoke from the crowd, referee Giovanni Ayroldi issued a red card to Otoa, a decision upheld by VAR.
Just before the half-hour mark, Lazio created their first significant opportunity when Matteo Guendouzi's low shot from a rebound forced a remarkable save from Nicola Leali.
However, Leali was powerless to stop the opening goal in the 32nd minute, following a turnover that allowed Guendouzi to find Zaccagni on the left. A combination of skillful footwork and a pass from Luca Pellegrini set up Taty Castellanos, who executed a spectacular scissor-kick volley into the net.
The match then returned to a more chaotic state for the remainder of the first half and the early part of the second half. Lazio maintained their advantage, and Nicolò Rovella missed a chance to secure the win just before the hour mark when he failed to convert a pass from Pellegrini after a duel with Vitinha.
Genoa had their own opportunity to equalize, but Christos Mandas made a stunning save to deny Johan Vásquez's header from a corner. Lazio eventually increased their lead with a crucial second goal as the match approached the three-quarter mark.
Pellegrini regained possession once again and initiated a play that culminated in Rovella delivering a precise pass to Boulaye Dia. Dia outstripped his defender as he approached the ball in the penalty area, effortlessly sliding it into the far corner from a tight angle.
Subsequently, the match took an unexpected twist when the goalscorer was substituted for Reda Belahyane, who was sent off just a minute after entering the game for what appeared to be a kick on Morten Thorsby. The initial yellow card was escalated to a red card by VAR, marking a forgettable debut for the young Moroccan.
Nevertheless, the outcome of the match was determined, and based on this performance, Genoa's pursuit of a top-10 finish will extend into another decade. On the other hand, Lazio can once again aspire for UEFA Champions League qualification, closing the gap to Bologna in fourth place to just one point after adding to their impressive record against lower-ranked teams this season (W12, D3, L2).
