George Russell wins Chinese Grand Prix Sprint for Mercedes

George Russell strengthened his early grip on the 2026 Formula 1 championship after claiming victory in the sprint race at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver started from pole position and managed the race effectively over 19 laps to finish ahead of Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

The victory earned Russell eight points and extended his lead in the drivers’ championship to 11 points. “It was pretty fun in the end,” Russell said after the race. “There was a lot of strategy involved, especially when it came to overtaking. Sprint races are usually quiet, so I hope this one was exciting to watch.”

Early Ferrari Challenge

Although Russell started from pole, the opening laps were anything but straightforward. Hamilton and Leclerc made aggressive starts and immediately pressured the Mercedes driver, with multiple lead changes occurring within the first five laps.

Hamilton, who won the sprint race in Shanghai last season, briefly challenged Russell before settling into a battle with his Ferrari teammate. Russell later acknowledged the challenge posed by the seven-time world champion.

Lewis did an amazing job early on. He caught me off guard a little, but that’s what 20 years of experience brings.”

Leclerc ultimately finished just 0.674 seconds behind Russell, while Hamilton completed the podium. The result also marked the first time Ferrari placed two drivers in the top three of a Formula 1 race or sprint event since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finale in 2024.

Safety car drama reshapes the race

The race took another turn when the safety car was deployed on lap 14 after Nico Hülkenberg stopped on track with a mechanical issue in his Audi Formula One Team car. The interruption prompted most of the front runners to dive into the pits for fresh tyres, adding another layer of strategy to the sprint format.

When racing resumed on lap 17, Russell maintained control at the front while Leclerc struggled slightly with wheelspin at the restart. Hamilton took advantage of the situation to close in on Lando Norris before overtaking him to move into podium contention.

Midfield Battles and Penalties

Behind the leading trio, the race produced several intense midfield battles. Reigning world champion Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren Formula One Team, though he admitted Ferrari and Mercedes appeared stronger in race conditions.

“Our pace just wasn’t there today,” Norris said. “They can manage the tyres much better than we can right now.”

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli finished fifth after serving a 10-second penalty for contact with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap. Antonelli briefly lost position during the safety car restart but managed to recover valuable points.

Verstappen struggles as Red Bull falter

It was a difficult race for Max Verstappen and the Red Bull Racing team. The four-time world champion finished ninth and expressed frustration with the car’s performance.

“Everything that could go wrong went wrong,” Verstappen said. “The balance was all over the place and tyre degradation was probably the worst on the grid.”

Updated Championship Standings

Russell’s victory strengthens his position at the top of the drivers’ standings.

Top Championship Positions After Shanghai Sprint

George Russell — 33 points

Kimi Antonelli — 22 points

Charles Leclerc — 22 points

Lewis Hamilton — 18 points

With qualifying for Sunday’s main race still to come, Russell’s sprint success gives Mercedes valuable momentum heading into the rest of the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.
