Georgia 2-0 Portugal: Georgia stun Portugal to earn historic win and place in last 16

Georgia secured a remarkable victory in the knockout stages of UEFA Euro 2024, thanks to goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Georges Mikautadze.

Despite being the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, Georgia displayed their determination and skill to defeat Group F winners Portugal with a 2-0 scoreline.

From the very beginning, Georgia showed their intent to claim their first-ever major tournament win as an independent nation. They wasted no time in making an impact, scoring a goal within two minutes of the match. Mikautadze capitalized on a mistake from Antonio Silva and delivered a precise pass to Kvaratskhelia, who expertly finished the ball into the far corner of the net.

Maintaining an unbeaten streak of 18 matches after scoring first, Willy Sagnol's team aimed to build on their early advantage. However, Portugal gradually found their rhythm and started to pose a threat. Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Palhinha both unleashed powerful shots, only to be denied by the impressive Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Roberto Martinez's rotated squad continued to search for an equalizer as the first half progressed, but clear-cut opportunities were scarce. Joao Felix came close with a long-range strike that narrowly missed the target.

Despite Portugal's efforts, Georgia managed to limit their opponents' goal-scoring opportunities. In fact, Georgia came close to extending their lead when Gvelesiani narrowly missed connecting with Kvaratskhelia's enticing free kick.

The second half mirrored the first, with Georgia maintaining their attacking momentum and threatening in the final third.

Diogo Dalot witnessed his curled attempt being deflected around the post for Portugal, while it was Sagnol's team who capitalized on their pressure. VAR determined that Silva had tripped Luka Lochoshvili in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick.

Mikautadze confidently stepped up and placed the ball into the bottom corner, securing his third goal of the tournament and providing Georgia with a crucial advantage in the remaining 30 minutes.

Despite Portugal's attempts to mount a thrilling comeback, Mamardashvili's save from Nelson Semedo prevented any hopes of success. Georgia comfortably navigated through the final minutes, setting up an intriguing last-16 clash against Spain.

Meanwhile, Portugal, under the guidance of Martínez, will be eager to bounce back in the knockout stages as they prepare to face Slovenia on Monday.
