Germany 2-0 Hungary: Musiala and Gundogan on target as Germany progress to last 16 with comfortable win

Germany, as the host nation, secured their place in the knockout stages of UEFA Euro 2024 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Hungary in Stuttgart.
Despite their contrasting performances in the Group A openers, Germany had a shaky start when Joshua Kimmich made a lapse of concentration, allowing Roland Sallai to make a move towards the goal.
Fortunately, Manuel Neuer's quick reflexes prevented Hungary from taking the lead. It took Germany until the twelfth minute to create a scoring opportunity, with Robert Andrich's powerful volley being blocked by Bendeguz Bolla.
Just moments after Kai Havertz missed a chance to score, Ilkay Gundogan capitalized on a pass from Musiala and displayed some impressive footwork before finding the back of the net from ten yards out, with the ball deflecting off Attila Fiola's knee and the crossbar.
Hungary strongly protested, believing that the German captain had committed a foul on Willi Orban during the buildup to the goal. However, VAR ruled in favor of the attacking team.
Marco Rossi's team responded well, and their captain, Domink Szoboszlai, came close to equalizing with a well-struck free kick that was expertly saved by Neuer. Barnabás Varga also had an opportunity to score from the rebound but couldn't convert.
In first-half stoppage time, Hungary thought they had scored through another Szoboszlai free-kick, which was flicked on by Orban before Sallai bundled it into the net. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offside flag raised for the initial header.
The hosts had the first opportunity of the second half, but Peter Gulacsi denied them twice in quick succession. Initially, he palmed away Gundogan's shot from a tight angle, then managed to cling onto Toni Kroos' deflected rebound from outside the box.
Just before the 60th minute, Varga caught Jonathan Tah off guard, but the Ferencvaros striker failed to steer his header on target in front of Neuer's goal and the masses of his supporters.
The home fans in Stuttgart erupted with relief as Gundogan found the net from the penalty spot after a slick German build-up orchestrated by Maximilian Mittelstadt.
Despite the introduction of Martin Adam for Hungary, the game's outcome remained unchanged. The clash between Julian Nagelsmann's team and Switzerland will determine their final position, while Hungary still has a chance to progress depending on other results before facing Scotland at the weekend.
