Germany beat Serbia to win FIBA World Cup for the first time

Dennis Schroder scored 28 PTS, Franz Wagner added 19, and Germany finished the World Cup unbeaten by defeating Serbia 83-77 in the final on Sunday night. It was Germany's first World Cup title; previously, its best finish had been a bronze medal in Indianapolis in 2002.
Germany won the tournament 8-0, making them the fifth unbeaten champion in a row.
Serbia (6-2) lost the title game for the second time in three tournaments, as Aleksa Avramovic scored 21 PTS and Bogdan Bogdanovic added 17. It was defeated 129-92 by the United States in the gold-medal game in 2014, and not much was anticipated of the team this summer as its best player, Nikola Jokic of the NBA champion Denver Nuggets, chose not to play and instead chose to rest for the upcoming season.
After a back-and-forth first half, a 22-10 third-quarter run gave Germany the breathing room it needed, and Serbia couldn't reclaim the lead down the stretch. It trimmed the lead downto 79-77 after Marko Guduric made a pair of free throws with 39.5 seconds remaining, but Schroder blew past two defenders for a layup on the ensuing German possession to reclaim a four-point lead.
