Germany win Olympic team relay triathlon as USA snatch silver

Germany emerged victorious in the mixed triathlon relay event at the Paris Olympics on Monday.

Laura Lindemann of Germany clinched the gold medal in a thrilling sprint finish during the final leg, narrowly beating the United States who settled for silver and Great Britain who took home the bronze after a close photo finish.

Initially, Britain was awarded the silver medal, but the decision was later reversed. The relay consists of a four-person sprint triathlon, where two men and two women complete a 300-meter swim, a seven-kilometer bike ride, and a 1.8-kilometer run.

Despite the pollution concerns surrounding the Seine River, which was used for the swim leg, the event proceeded smoothly.

The river has faced pollution issues despite significant upgrades to the Paris sewerage and water treatment system, making it challenging for athletes to train in the water due to high bacteria levels.

On the eve of the mixed relay, the Belgian National Olympic Committee (COIB) announced that Claire Michel had fallen ill following the women's triathlon last week.

The committee stated that both the COIB and Belgian Triathlon are hopeful that valuable lessons will be taken into account for upcoming triathlon competitions at the Olympics.

Consequently, the Belgian team decided to withdraw from Monday's relay event. The Paris 2024 organizing committee emphasized in a statement that water quality testing conducted on the day of the individual triathlon last week had indicated "very good" results according to World Triathlon's standards.

The decision to proceed with an event is ultimately made by the international federation, World Triathlon, in collaboration with Paris 2024, based on test outcomes and various criteria, notably health related. Paris 2024 reiterated that the health and welfare of athletes remain their utmost priority.
