Ghana re-appoint Otto Addo as head coach following disastrous Cup of Nations

Officials announced on Friday that Ghana has once again chosen Otto Addo (48) as their new coach, after the departure of Chris Hughton (65) following the disappointing first-round elimination at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast earlier this year.
Addo will officially assume the position in May, but prior to that, he will be in charge of the friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda in Morocco this month.
He previously led Ghana at the World Cup in Qatar while also serving as a talent scout for Borussia Dortmund.
The club has now agreed to release him from his contract so that he can fully dedicate himself to leading the national team.
Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku expressed his admiration for Addo's performance during the interview process, stating that he stood out among the other coaches who applied for the job. The search committee also held him in high regard.
Addo assumed the position of Ghana's coach in February 2022 following the dismissal of Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac.
Despite defeating South Korea in the World Cup, Ghana finished at the bottom of their group, resulting in Addo's immediate departure.
Expressing his gratitude, Addo stated, "Although it was a difficult decision for me, I am thankful and delighted that Borussia Dortmund has granted me this opportunity."
Having already gained valuable experience as an interim coach in 2022, Addo eagerly anticipates the challenges that lie ahead.
His primary objective now is to revive Ghana's 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, which has encountered setbacks.
While they secured a 1-0 victory against Madagascar in their opening match, they suffered a similar scoreline defeat against Comoros.
It is important to note that only the top team in the six-team group will automatically qualify for the finals.
In June, Ghana is scheduled to play away against Mali and then host the Central African Republic in their next two qualifiers.
