Gianni Infantino hails Club World Cup Kickoff as ‘New Era’ for Global Football

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has declared the launch of the new 32-team Club World Cup as the dawn of a “new era” in football, comparing its historic significance to the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup. The revamped tournament kicks off Saturday at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, with Inter Miami set to face Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the opening match.

“It starts a new era of football, a new era of club football. A little bit like when, in 1930, the first World Cup started,” Infantino said in an interview with AFP.

A Global Stage for Clubs

Infantino emphasized that the tournament’s primary goal is to globalize club football by giving teams from underrepresented regions a world-class platform.

We want to be inclusive. We want to give opportunities to clubs from all over the world... because when you scratch the surface, we say [football] is the number one sport in the world — and it is — but the elite is very concentrated in very few clubs, in very few countries.

For the first time in its history, the Club World Cup will feature 32 teams from every continent, mirroring the traditional men’s World Cup format.

The FIFA president highlighted how this expanded format will benefit players from countries not typically represented on the world stage. Citing George Weah, the only African Ballon d'Or winner, who never played in a FIFA World Cup, Infantino said:

He would have been playing in a Club World Cup and made not only his club but also his country proud.”

The 2025 edition offers an opportunity for players from over 80 nations to showcase their talent on football’s biggest club stage — many of whom would likely never feature in a senior national World Cup.

Despite the grand vision, the Club World Cup has been met with criticism over low ticket demand and a controversial dynamic pricing policy. Critics argue that fluctuating prices have discouraged fans from committing to early purchases.

Infantino responded firmly:

“I believe, I’m convinced that as soon as the ball starts rolling, the whole world will realise what is happening here. It’s something special.

He brushed off concerns over fixture congestion, stressing that the Club World Cup is a historic leap forward, not a burden on the football calendar.

Opening Match Spotlight: Inter Miami vs. Al Ahly

The tournament opener features Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami going head-to-head with African heavyweights Al Ahly, a clash that epitomizes Infantino’s dream of a truly global club competition.

What’s Next?

  • Tournament Format: 32 teams, similar to the FIFA World Cup group and knockout stages.
  • Dates: Begins June 15, 2025.
  • Venue Highlight: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami.
  • Top Clubs Involved: Inter Miami, Al Ahly, Chelsea, Palmeiras, Al Hilal, Auckland City, and more.

Infantino’s bold comparison to the 1930 World Cup sets a high bar, but if the competition lives up to the hype, the Club World Cup 2025 could reshape international club football for years to come and become one of the most significant developments in modern football news.
