Giovanni De Gennaro grabs gold for Italy in men's kayak slalom

Titouan Castryck, a young French competitor, finished just two-tenths of a second behind to claim the silver medal in his Olympic debut, while Pau Echaniz of Spain took home the bronze.
De Gennaro expressed his disbelief and joy at his victory, stating, "I think this is still a dream. I don't know and I can't believe it. I just want to see my family."
The competition intensified as Echaniz set the initial time of 88.87 seconds, putting pressure on the other participants. Despite the presence of several experienced Olympic medalists, only two athletes managed to surpass his time.
The atmosphere became electric when Italy's De Gennaro, ranked second in the world, took to the course and swiftly gained the lead, thrilling the crowd with his agile maneuvers. Jiri Prskavec's hopes of defending his Olympic title were dashed when he incurred two two-second penalties, ultimately finishing in eighth place.
Jakub Grigar of Slovakia, who secured a silver medal in Tokyo, experienced a similar setback as he significantly reduced his speed during the latter half of the course, causing his hopes for another Olympic medal to diminish.
With only three competitors remaining, the 19-year-old Castryck energized the home crowd, who erupted in cheers, waving flags and amplifying their support with each successful maneuver he executed.
However, a mistake at gate 17 disrupted his momentum, resulting in a finish that placed him in second position.
Germany's Noah Hegge collided with the poles at gate 16, which ended his pursuit, leaving only Joe Clarke of Britain, the 2016 champion, in contention.
Clarke, too, was unable to keep pace with De Gennaro, who celebrated exuberantly as the Briton crossed the finish line more than a second and a half behind.
"It means everything. Everybody was on my side. I had a lot of people supporting me, especially after Tokyo when I couldn't make my run. Today I'm just happy that I could be myself and with this result, it's just a dream come true," De Gennaro expressed.
