Girona 0-1 Liverpool: Salah on target as Reds consolidate top spot

Liverpool continued their flawless performance in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), achieving a sixth consecutive victory with a narrow 1-0 triumph at Estadi Montilivi, thereby inflicting a fifth defeat on Girona in their inaugural European campaign.
The quest for a sixth straight win commenced positively for Arne Slot’s team, as Ryan Gravenberch delivered a precise pass to Darwin Nunez, who managed to challenge Paulo Gazzaniga despite the difficult angle.
Nevertheless, it was the home team that lamented their squandered opportunities, with Daley Blind unable to connect with Miguel Gutierrez’s cross from close range, while both Bryan Gil and Gutiérrez had their attempts thwarted by the returning Alisson.
The high intensity of the match showed no signs of diminishing as the first half progressed, with Nunez having another shot saved, interspersed with Gravenberch making a crucial block on an Alejandro Francés attempt, and Yáser Asprilla forcing Alisson into a remarkable save from 20 yards, as Girona appeared revitalized compared to their previous four winless matches.
In pursuit of securing a top 24 position, Míchel’s squad began the second half with vigor, as Arnaut Danjuma intercepted a pass, embarked on a run, and directed a shot straight at Alisson within the opening minute.
However, the six-time European champions began to impose their authority, and at the hour mark, a scramble in the home penalty area led to Andy Robertson testing Gazzaniga, only for VAR to identify a foul by Donny van de Beek on Luis Diaz during the incident.
Mohamed Salah then took responsibility for the ensuing penalty, which he confidently converted, marking his second goal of the Champions League season.
In six of their last eight away fixtures, both teams had found the net; however, Liverpool displayed no inclination to permit the Blanquivermells any opportunity to re-enter the match, effectively preventing further attempts on their goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold nearly secured a second goal with a signature free-kick in the closing moments.
Securing three additional points will ensure that they maintain their position at the top of the Champions League standings as they approach the penultimate matchday.
Furthermore, a spot in the last 16 could be confirmed as early as tomorrow, contingent upon the outcomes of other matches. In contrast, Girona's inability to score for the third consecutive UCL match leaves them three points adrift of 24th place for the time being.
