Girona 1-1 Athletic Bilbao: Hosts drop to second after stalemate

Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams scored in the second half to hold Girona to a 1-1 draw in LaLiga on Monday, denying Girona a return to the top spot.

After the break, Girona took the lead when unmarked midfielder Viktor Tsygankov fired a low shot past Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon, before Williams equalized in the 67th minute.

Girona are second in the table with 35 points, level with leaders Real Madrid, who won 3-0 at Cadiz on Sunday.

Yangel Herrera of Girona thought he had opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a header after receiving a pass from Savio, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Bilbao dominated the first half, and Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga helped keep the scoreless until halftime by denying Oihan Sancet, Oscar de Marcos, and Dani Vivian.

After the break, however, Williams scored from the edge of the box to cancel out Tsygankov's opener, ending Girona's run of five consecutive league victories.

Bilbao are fifth in the table with 25 points from 14 games, six points behind fourth-placed Barcelona and third-placed Atletico Madrid, who have a game in hand.
