Girona 1-2 Arsenal: Nwaneri stars as Gunners defeat hosts to secure third spot

Arsenal successfully progressed to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 with a 2-1 victory against Girona, thereby extending their unbeaten streak across all competitions to five matches.
Although both teams had little at stake beyond pride, the first half proved to be quite eventful. The visitors created the first opportunity within just four minutes, as Raheem Sterling executed a skillful turn before shooting narrowly wide of the far post.
Leandro Trossard squandered a significant chance shortly thereafter, failing to make proper contact right in front of the goal, resulting in the ball veering off target.
The Gunners did find the net in the 12th minute, but Riccardo Calafiori's second goal in as many games was ruled out for offside after he finished expertly from a tight angle.
Girona began to assert themselves as the half progressed, taking an unexpected lead through former Tottenham player Arnaut Danjuma just before the half-hour mark.
After making a run behind the defense, he struck first-time past Neto, who, after a shaky start, found himself well out of position on his Arsenal debut.
However, Mikel Arteta’s side responded effectively, earning a penalty ten minutes later when Thomas Partey was fouled in the box. Jorginho executed his signature run-up before calmly converting past Pau Lopez to equalize.
The Gunners then took the lead before halftime, as Ethan Nwaneri skillfully cut inside and struck into the bottom corner for his first UCL goal. Trossard nearly added a third shortly after, hitting the underside of the crossbar from a tight angle.
Arsenal carried their momentum into the second half and nearly scored again immediately. Alejandro Frances almost inadvertently directed the ball into his own net, relieved to see it loop just wide.
From the ensuing corner, Nwaneri's delivery was only prevented from going in by his teammate Jurrien Timber, who had come on as a substitute for Partey at halftime.
The 17-year-old showcased his skills on the field, nearly achieving a second goal with a half-volley that narrowly missed the target.
The Gunners exhibited dominance throughout the match but faced a near setback when two substitutes from Girona nearly equalized. Portu delivered an exquisite pass to the back post, where Christhian Stuani converted, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
In stoppage time, Arsenal was awarded another penalty after Frances handled Sterling’s attempted pass; however, the Chelsea loanee's shot was saved from the penalty spot.
Despite this, Arsenal managed to secure the victory, extending their remarkable unbeaten away streak across all competitions to nine matches, while the hosts concluded their European campaign on a disappointing note.
