Grant, Ayton power Trailblazers to a 114-110 victory over Pacers

In a gripping showdown on Monday night, the Portland Trail Blazers secured a hard-fought 114-110 victory over the Indiana Pacers, fueled by standout performances from Jerami Grant and Deandre Ayton.

Grant showcased his scoring prowess, amassing an impressive 34 points on a stellar 12-of-18 shooting performance. Meanwhile, Ayton's impactful contribution included 22 points coupled with a dominant display on the boards, grabbing 13 crucial rebounds.

Adding to the Trail Blazers' offensive firepower, Malcolm Brogdon delivered a pivotal 24 points, including a decisive basket in the closing moments that sealed the victory.

Reflecting on his performance, Grant expressed his aggressive approach, stating, "I got some shots to go. I just wanted to be aggressive."

However, despite a valiant effort from the Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton, who led their scoring with 33 points, Indiana encountered difficulties. Bruce Brown, Myles Turner, and Bennedict Mathurin contributed 11 points each, but the team was hindered by turnovers, committing 20, and a challenging 8-for-33 shooting from beyond the arc.

Expressing disappointment in the team's lackluster display, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle lamented, "It was a really poor performance, uninspired in many ways." He emphasized the need to address the team's mindset, acknowledging the dangers of underestimating opponents in tournament games.

The game's intensity reached a crescendo in the final moments as Portland's Brogdon capitalized on a turnover, extending their lead to 114-110 with a driving 7-footer. Despite a late attempt by the Pacers' Buddy Hield with a long-range shot, the Trail Blazers held on for the win.

The match saw a seesaw battle, with rookie Scoot Henderson's clutch 12-foot shot at the end of the third quarter knotting the score at 83-all. However, Grant's assertive drive and floater gave the Trail Blazers the edge at 96-94 with 6:36 remaining, a lead they held onto till the end.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups commended his team's resilience after a challenging loss in the previous game, emphasizing the focus on defensive solidity. He praised their efforts in executing defensive strategies, acknowledging the importance of establishing themselves as a formidable defensive unit.

The Trail Blazers, initially trailing by four after the first quarter, managed to carve out a 65-60 halftime lead. Their sharp shooting from beyond the arc, sinking 7 of 11 3-point attempts in the first half, played a pivotal role in setting the tone for the game.

However, amidst the competitive battle, Pacers forward Jalen Smith suffered a heel contusion, requiring assistance to leave the court during the third quarter.

Looking ahead, the Trail Blazers are set to face the Cleveland Cavaliers next, while the Pacers will take on the Miami Heat in back-to-back games on Thursday and Saturday.
