Greece Extend Winning Streak with Nations League Victory Over Ireland

Greece honored the memory of the late George Baldock in an exemplary manner by securing a 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland at home in the UEFA Nations League. This win allowed Greece to maintain their flawless record in this year's competition, remaining unbeaten in their head-to-head encounters (W6, D1).

Although Greece dominated the first half, it was Ireland that had the first opportunity of the match just four minutes in, with Evan Ferguson sending his shot wide under pressure from a defender.

Following this, the hosts missed several chances, with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher playing a crucial role in keeping the score level. He first deflected a close-range volley from Georgios Masouras and then executed a remarkable double save to thwart attempts from Anastasios Bakasetas and Vangelis Pavlidis. Kelleher further showcased his skills with a quick reaction save against Dimitrios Giannoulis’ first-time effort, as Greece concluded the half with 13 shots and 75% possession.

The second half saw Greece take the lead swiftly, as Bakasetas’ half-volley deflected into the top corner. In a fitting tribute to Baldock, the midfielder raised his black armband in celebration.

Ireland struggled to pose a significant threat in search of an equalizer, with Troy Parrott’s weak header drifting a few yards wide and substitute Jack Taylor failing to convert two volley attempts from a corner.

Greece managed the game effectively, achieving their sixth clean sheet in seven encounters with Ireland, and even extended their lead in stoppage time when substitute Petros Mantalos seized on a poor pass from Kelleher, rounded the goalkeeper, and tapped the ball into an empty net.

This result provided a perfect conclusion for the Greeks, while the Republic of Ireland must continue to wait for their first consecutive Nations League victories since the tournament began.
