Gregg Berhalter to stepdown as US men's coach after Copa América early exit

This decision comes after a disappointing early elimination on home turf at the Copa America tournament.

The team's failure to progress past the group stage, marked by a surprising 2-1 loss to Panama and a devastating 1-0 defeat against Uruguay, raised questions about Berhalter's future with the team.

U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone expressed gratitude for Berhalter's efforts and commitment to the Men's National Team. Moving forward, the focus will be on collaborating with Sporting Director Matt Crocker to identify a suitable candidate with a proven track record in the sport to lead the USMNT towards a successful new chapter on the field.

Berhalter's departure represents a sudden change in luck for the United States national team, as he was anticipated to lead the team's development in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host.

Berhalter, who took on the role in 2018, guided the U.S. to the knockout rounds of the 2022 World Cup, but soon found himself embroiled in a public feud with Gio Reyna, a promising young talent on the team.

Following the expiration of his contract at the end of 2022, U.S. Soccer conducted an extensive search for a new coach before ultimately rehiring Berhalter last June, with the full support of the players.

As the first former national team player to coach the United States at a World Cup, Berhalter achieved 44 victories in his 74 matches as head coach.
