Grigor Dimitrov outlasts Andrey Rublev to punch US Open quarter-final ticket

Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, aged 33, thwarted a determined comeback attempt by sixth seed Andrey Rublev, 26, to advance to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time since 2019, securing a victory with scores of 6-3, 7-6(3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3 on Sunday.

The ninth seed demonstrated exceptional performance by winning 80% of his first-serve points and delivering 17 aces, which proved to be a source of frustration for the intense Russian competitor. Rublev exhibited his frustration by striking his racket against the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium and injuring his wrist, necessitating medical assistance during the first set.

The closely contested match ultimately favored Dimitrov in the pivotal fifth set, much to the delight of the New York audience, which included Serena Williams enjoying the event's signature honey deuce cocktail.

Rublev's frustration became evident when he commenced the fourth game of the first set with two double faults, followed by a forehand that landed in the net and another that went wide, allowing Dimitrov to secure his first break of the match.

Dimitrov appeared to be in control after winning the last five points of a tiebreak in the second set, but the Russian fought back to level the match by winning the subsequent two sets.

A crucial break in the fourth game of the final set provided Dimitrov with an advantage he would not relinquish, setting the stage for a quarter-final clash against either American Frances Tiafoe or Australia's Alexei Popyrin.

"The pivotal win in the second set significantly bolstered my confidence and trust in my game and my physical condition," Dimitrov remarked to reporters.

"After the initial sets, he began to play exceptionally well. There was little more I could do, so I had to rein it in and await my chance.

"It materialized in the fifth set. I believe that was the key difference today. Following that, I was able to maintain my momentum, although it was quite challenging."
