Guimaraes hails League Cup win 'the best day of my life'

Newcastle United's captain, Bruno Guimaraes, expressed that Sunday marked the most significant day of his life, as the team triumphed over Liverpool with a score of 2-1 in the League Cup final held at Wembley Stadium, securing their first major domestic trophy in seven decades.

Newcastle, who last celebrated domestic success with an FA Cup victory in 1955, opened the scoring in the first half when center-back Dan Burn scored with a header, and they extended their lead in the second half with a goal from striker Alexander Isak.

"It's all for these fans. They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history," Brazil midfielder Guimaraes said.

"We can now say we are the champions again...

"I don't have any words. It's the best day of my life. For them (the fans) it's like the World Cup.

"People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable.

"This is my second home. We are making history.

One day, when I depart from this club, I hope the supporters will chant my name in the same manner they do for (former Newcastle captain Alan) Shearer. He sent me a message prior to the match, and I am feeling quite emotional today.

Burn put Newcastle in the lead in the 45th minute with a powerful header. The Newcastle center-back moved to the far post, extending his neck to direct the ball down into the ground, eluding the desperate dive of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Subsequently, Newcastle had a goal from Isak ruled out by VAR for offside, but shortly thereafter, the Swedish striker found the net, capitalizing on a knock-down from Jacob Murphy and scoring in the 52nd minute.

Liverpool showed some signs of life towards the end of the match, with Federico Chiesa scoring in stoppage time to provide them with a somewhat undeserved opportunity, but Eddie Howe's Newcastle team managed to maintain their lead.

Newcastle manager Howe expressed his confidence in his players' ability to secure a positive result against the Premier League leaders.

"Emotional, very emotional. It is very unlike me. We knew what was at stake and just wanted to do everyone proud," he said.

"We were desperate to try and win the trophy after so many years of hurt.

The atmosphere was distinct. Although we emerged victorious in the match and the outcome will be viewed favorably, our preparation was thorough, and I had great confidence in the players' ability to deliver.
