Guinea 1-0 Gambia: Guinea put one foot in AFCON's second round with crucial win over Gambia

Guinea made significant progress towards securing a spot in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the third consecutive tournament following a close 1-0 victory against The Gambia.

After starting their AFCON campaign with a cautious draw against Cameroon, Kaba Diawara's team knew they needed to step up their game against the lowest-ranked team in the competition.

Guinea took control of the game early on, aiming to assert their dominance, but the Gambian defense remained strong and limited the National Elephants' goal-scoring opportunities.

Undeterred, Guinea continued to dominate as the first half progressed, and they came close to breaking the deadlock when Mohamed Bayo's powerful shot hit the post.

That was the best chance of the first half, as Baboucarr Gaye comfortably saved a header from Bayo, keeping the scores level at halftime.

Guinea carried their momentum into the second half, but Gaye once again made a crucial save to deny Sekou Sylla's low shot.

The game continued to be one-sided, and Guinea finally capitalized on their pressure in the 69th minute when Aguibou Camara converted a cross from Morgan Guilavogui.

Eager to secure a comfortable victory, Guinea pushed for a second goal, but Bayo was unlucky as his delicate strike hit the woodwork.

Despite a late push from the Gambian team, Guinea's defense held strong and secured the win, maintaining their impressive form with just one defeat in their last eight international matches (W4, D3).
