Halep face Badosa in Miami opener

Simona Halep is set to make her comeback in the upcoming week following a successful appeal against her doping suspension. She will be participating in the Miami Open, where Iga Swiatek, the reigning champion of Indian Wells, aims to achieve the impressive feat of winning both tournaments consecutively.
Simona Halep, who was granted a wildcard entry into the Miami Open following a reduction in her four-year ban to nine months by the top court for global sport, is scheduled to compete against Paula Badosa on Tuesday. The victor of this match will then face world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the second round.
Halep's upcoming match against the 80th-ranked Badosa from Spain will be her first appearance since the 2022 U.S. Open, where she suffered an early exit in the first round at the hands of Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur.
The former Wimbledon and French Open champion was suspended in October 2022 after testing positive for roxadustat, a banned substance that enhances red blood cell production, during that year's U.S. Open. Halep vehemently refuted the allegations made against her.
With a perfect 2-0 record in previous encounters against Badosa, Halep has never dropped more than three games in a set against her opponent.
Meanwhile, top seed Swiatek, who missed defending her Miami Open title last year due to injury, is back in excellent form following a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory over ninth seed Maria Sakkari in the Indian Wells final.
Swiatek is now aiming to secure back-to-back titles at Indian Wells and Miami, a remarkable achievement known as the Sunshine Double due to the tournaments being held in California and Florida, respectively. This would mark the second time Swiatek has accomplished this feat.
If Swiatek manages to clinch the Miami title, she will join Steffi Graf (1994, 1996) as the only women to achieve the Sunshine Double twice.
Florida native Coco Gauff, who reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells, is set to receive strong support from the crowd as she returns to Miami for the first time since her victory at last year's U.S. Open.
