Hamilton's Ferrari debut headlines Australian Grand Prix as F1 season kicks off

Lewis Hamilton is set to make his highly anticipated Ferrari debut at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, launching his pursuit of a record-breaking eighth Formula One drivers’ championship. Having made the high-profile switch from Mercedes to the iconic Maranello-based team, Hamilton’s arrival has reignited excitement among Ferrari fans, particularly in Melbourne, where the city’s large Italian community is expected to show strong support.

Ferrari, the most successful team in F1 history, has not won a championship since claiming the 2008 constructors’ title. Last season, they finished as runners-up to McLaren, who dominated the standings. Ferrari will be looking to replicate their success at Albert Park from last year when Carlos Sainz, now with Williams, led a 1-2 finish ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc.

However, McLaren could be the team to watch after an impressive pre-season. Data from winter testing suggests they were the fastest on low fuel in Bahrain and had an edge over Ferrari in race pace. That will fuel hopes among Australian fans for a home victory, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri aiming to become the first Australian to win at Albert Park since the race joined the F1 calendar in 1985. Piastri finished fourth in his home Grand Prix last season, just behind third-placed teammate Lando Norris.

Norris, considered the bookmakers' pre-season favorite for the championship, could be Piastri’s biggest challenge in ending Australia’s long wait for a home winner. Yet, amid all the attention on Hamilton’s Ferrari debut and McLaren’s potential, the reigning champion is ready to defend his crown.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, chasing his fifth consecutive drivers’ title, will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Michael Schumacher as only the second driver to achieve that feat. Red Bull, who finished third in last season’s constructors’ championship, were less active than their rivals during pre-season testing, leaving questions over their car’s competitiveness.

"We learnt a lot from testing, but there is still a lot more work to be done," Verstappen said. "We have ideas about what we can do and how we can take on what we learnt at testing, so we will see how we go when we start driving on the track."

Verstappen will have a new teammate in New Zealand’s Liam Lawson, who replaces Sergio Perez and is expected to provide stronger support to Red Bull’s lead driver. Lawson is one of six drivers making their first appearance in a Formula One season-opener at Albert Park.

Mercedes will also attract plenty of attention, with 18-year-old Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli stepping into the seat left vacant by Hamilton. British teenager Oliver Bearman will debut for Haas, while French F2 runner-up Isack Hadjar gets his first start for Racing Bulls. Brazilian F2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto joins Sauber, while home favorite Jack Doohan will make his debut for Alpine, though speculation suggests his seat could be temporary, with Argentine reserve driver Franco Colapinto waiting in the wings.

While Albert Park will provide the first real glimpse of how teams compare, the unpredictable nature of the circuit often delivers surprises. With scorching heat expected for Saturday’s qualifying and rain forecast on race day, the season-opener could throw an early curveball in what promises to be an exhilarating year of Formula One racing.
