Hardik Pandya to take over Mumbai Indians captaincy from Rohit Sharma in IPL

Pandya, who played a crucial role in Mumbai's triumph in four IPL seasons from 2015 to 2021, led the Gujarat Titans to victory in their inaugural season in 2022. Furthermore, he captained the team that finished as runners-up to the Chennai Super Kings this year.

However, Pandya expressed his desire to return to his original team, prompting Mumbai to inject an additional 150 million rupees ($1,806,546) into Gujarat's funds ahead of the IPL auction on Tuesday.

According to Mumbai's global head of performance, Mahela Jayawardene, this move is in line with their philosophy of building a legacy and being prepared for the future.

He stated, "Mumbai Indians have always been fortunate to have exceptional leaders, from Sachin Tendulkar to Harbhajan Singh, Ricky Ponting, and Rohit.

While contributing to our immediate success, they have always prioritized strengthening the team for the long term."

In line with this philosophy, Hardik Pandya will take on the captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.

Pandya's appointment as Mumbai captain marks the end of Rohit's era, during which the franchise secured the IPL title five times between 2013 and 2020. It is worth noting that Rohit also serves as the captain of the Indian national team.

The team expressed their gratitude towards Rohit, stating, "Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and beloved teams in IPL history. We eagerly anticipate his continued guidance and experience, both on and off the field, to further strengthen Mumbai Indians."
