Heidenheim 0-2 Chelsea: Sancho stars as Blues maintain perfect Conference League record

Chelsea secured their fourth consecutive victory in the league phase of the UEFA Conference League, triumphing over European newcomers Heidenheim with a score of 2-0 at the Voith-Arena.

In a matchup featuring two of the six teams maintaining perfect records in this season's Conference League, Heidenheim demonstrated commendable performance during the first 20 minutes, showcasing moments of offensive ambition.

After Marc Guiu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall tested Kevin Muller with shots, it was the home team that nearly took the lead through Paul Wanner, who skillfully maneuvered into the box and directed a near-post shot at Filip Jorgensen.

This opportunity served as a wake-up call for Chelsea, who soon came close to scoring with a lofted attempt from their leading scorer, Christopher Nkunku.

The Blues had a penalty claim dismissed when referee Serdar Gozubuyuk overturned his initial decision to award Mykhailo Mudryk a penalty after a VAR review.

Despite finishing the first half with a strong performance, the visitors could not convert their dominance into a lead, as Muller once again intervened to thwart Nkunku's close-range effort.

Following a record-setting 8-0 victory over Noah in their previous Conference League match, Chelsea found the Heidenheim defense, which had conceded only one goal in European competition, to be a more formidable challenge.

However, just six minutes into the second half, Nkunku extended his scoring streak, netting a goal in each of Chelsea's five European matches this season by capitalizing on a pass from Jadon Sancho and firing from within the box.

In pursuit of an equalizer, the German side created multiple opportunities, with Leo Scienza attempting two shots on goal before Jorgensen made a crucial save, denying Wanner a seemingly certain goal.

The second half remained open, generating further chances as Nkunku's weak effort during a one-on-one situation allowed Maximilian Breunig to appear to equalize with a diving header, only to be ruled offside.

Chelsea secured their victory in the 86th minute when Mudryk's side-footed shot left Müller with no opportunity to respond.

This goal ensured that Cesare Casadei’s late red card did not adversely affect Enzo Maresca’s team, allowing them to break a three-match winless streak in Germany and reclaim the top position in the Conference League standings.

On the other hand, Heidenheim experienced another setback with Breunig's late offside goal, marking their failure to score in four of their last six home games.

This situation is far from favorable for a team facing challenges in domestic competitions; however, with three wins out of four in European matches, Frank Schmidt’s squad remains in the automatic qualification spots with two games remaining.
