Holstein Kiel 4-2 Borussia Dortmund: Kiel shock Dortmund in thrilling six-goal encounter

Marcel Rapp's Holstein Kiel achieved a historic milestone by securing a remarkable 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund, the eight-time German champions, marking their inaugural encounter in the Bundesliga.

Following a defeat to Freiburg in their previous match, Kiel demonstrated resilience by scoring twice in the last five minutes, continuing their momentum against Dortmund with an impressive three-goal lead by halftime.

The underdogs initiated their surprising offensive when Shuto Machino broke the deadlock just before the 30-minute mark, delivering a powerful right-footed shot into the top corner of Gregor Kobel's net.

Recognizing Dortmund's weaknesses, Kiel pressed forward on the counterattack and soon netted a second goal. Lasse Rosenboom delivered a precise cross to Phil Harres, who expertly headed the ball into the net.

In a dream scenario for the hosts, the score escalated to three as Harres turned provider once more, setting up Alexander Bernhardsson, who skillfully hooked the ball into the goal from 12 yards out, concluding a breathtaking first half.

Dortmund's first half could hardly have gone worse, prompting a determined response in the second half. Giovanni Reyna ignited the comeback with a stunning goal, collecting the ball at the edge of the penalty area and firing it into the far left corner.

Jamie Gittens followed suit with an equally impressive strike, finding the opposite corner of the net with finesse.

Dortmund received a potential lifeline late in the match when Kiel's captain, Lewis Holtby, was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Felix Nmecha. However, despite their numerical advantage, the visitors were unable to capitalize, as Kiel ultimately scored the sixth goal of the match.

Kobel's positioning at the opposite end for a last-minute corner allowed Jann-Fiete Arp to seize the opportunity. After regaining possession, he sprinted the length of the pitch and calmly placed the ball into an unguarded net from a distance, thereby clinching Kiel's third victory of the Bundesliga season.
